"Infringement of personality rights via the internet: Jurisdiction and applicable law"
About the Speaker:
Symeon C. Symeonides has taught private international law for 44 years, primarily in the United States but also in Europe and elsewhere. He has published several books and articles on this subject and has drafted choice-of-law codifications for Louisiana and Oregon.
About the Topic:
Conflicts of laws arising from infringement of personality rights have always been difficult, if only because they implicate conflicting societal values, such as freedom of speech and access to information, on the one hand, and protection of reputation and privacy, on the other hand. The ubiquity of the internet has dramatically increased the frequency and intensity of these conflicts. The speaker will present a proposed international model law that aspires to facilitate the resolution of these conflicts in a practical, efficient, and balanced way.
About the virtual workshop series:
The virtual workshop series “Current Research in Private International Law" is organised by Ralf Michaels and Michael Cremer. The series features guest speakers and Institute staff members who present and discuss their work on current developments and research topics in private international law. The workshops are geared to scholars who are researching in the field of private international law, but attendance is open to all individuals having an academic interest (including doctoral candidates and students).
