Lecture by Eleanor Sharpston (former Advocate General at the ECJ)

Thursday, 21 April 2022, 5:00 p.m. (CEST)

"Is the Rule of Law like an elephant? Do we know it (and therefore recognise a threat to it) when we see it?"

About the Topic:

Like breathing, the rule of law is something that we take pretty much for granted in civilised Western democracies. But do we actually realise the role that it plays and what it entails? And do we recognise the warning signs that – unthinkably – it may now possibly be under threat?

About the Speaker:

Eleanor Sharpston QC, an economist and linguist turned lawyer, combined work as an independent legal practitioner at the English Bar with an academic career before serving as one of the advocates-general at the Court of Justice of the European Union from 2006 to 2020.
